Presented by the Theatre shop on Aug 03, 2022 at the Summer Theater.
Director’s Note:
Like all tools, maps can be used to help or harm. To liberate or dominate. This is a play about the best and worst of cartography:
”Geography lays open to the Government and to the Capitalist the hidden resources of the remote parts of this great Empire. It teachers the one how to govern at the least cost, and the other how to profit from the surplus capital and labour of the Country that, thru’ the Royal Geographical Society, may be made known sooner than thru’ any other means.” - A letter to Roderick Murchison, president of the Royal Geographic Society, 1852
”The indolent, sun-loving people of the Southern latitudes have ever proved more easy to dominate than those who ahve been nurtured in a colder atmosphere. The expansion of the white races, a problem which grows in weight and importance from year to year, must, in a not very remote future, find a partial solution in the extermination of many of the dark-skinned races.” - Holdich, future president of the Royal Geographical Society, 1916
”A map is not the territory. The world is not the thing.” - Koczybski, Science and Sanity, 1933
”All models are wrong, but some are useful.” - George Box, Science and Statistics, 1976
We can’t ignore the history that got us to this moment, or the present challenges we all face. Hopefully, though, we can use art to map out a future that we’re excited to explore.
Due to COVID19 precautions, all theater shows in 2022 were performed in the Summer Theater.
