Director's Note:
The Greatest Showman, a stunningly popular movie musical loosely based on the life of P.T. Barnum, opened in theaters last Christmas. Much of the criticism leveled at the movie musical was around how it presented PT. Barnum through rose-colored glasses, ignoring the darker side of his story. The movie painted him as a champion of the downtrodden, which he was not. The real P.T. Barnum was a charming, clever, lying, cheating, exploitive, racist, sexist, narcissist whose only concern was making as much money as possible. So why do this version of Barnum's story? For one thing, Barnum is much more open about showing Barnum as he was, and not how he would like us to remember him. Second, and more importantly, the theme of cold-hard fact versus exciting fiction and the exploration of how someone can use charm, guile, and trumpery to win over the cheering masses both feel very relevant in today's world.
