Director's Note
What would happen if Jesus of Nazareth came today instead of 2000 years ago? This is the question Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber were asking when their 1973 hit "Jesus Christ Superstar." It is set in the "hippie" subculture scene, a group on the outskirts of society much like the early christians. As Jesus and his followers challenged the authority and customs of the time, so did the hippies of Rice and Webber's era.
When deciding where to set Buck's Rock's 2001 production of JCS, I rejected the idea of setting it in its original period. The last thing JCS should become is a period piece about hippies. So who are the people on the outside today? Who are the people rejecting contemporary authority and searching for a bettery way? The rave scene comes to mind. These underground, often illegal, dance parties together with their "love and peace" [??] and familial attitudes reflect the feelings of Jesus's first disciples.
So tonight we have set Jesus' final days in and around a 2001 rave. Many thanks to all the Buck's Rock ravers who helped and informed us and to Mickey and Laura for allowing us to push boundaries. Rave on!
