Oh What a Lovely War will be my thirtieth theatrical production at Buck's Rock. For the last ten summers of my life I have traveled from my home in England to spend eight weeks in a collection of makeshift, AC-free buildings to work as a camp counselor. Why? you may ask, and many have. The reason I have been drawn back across the ocean year after year is simple: the campers of Buck's Rock. The names change, young children grow into young adults, but one thing remains constant in the flux that is Buck's Rock, the will to learn and the need to question. When Dr. Ernst Bulova created Buck's Rock over fifty years ago, he created not a liberal arts camp, but a camp that nurtures individual thoughts.

Oh What a Lovely War, the production you will see tonight, questions war and man's strong need for conflict. War is presented as a comedy of farcical proportions. I would hesitate to produce such a complex and demanding piece of theatre at an average summer camp, but Buck's Rock is not average and the young people that are drawn to this most special place demand the exceptional, for they are exceptional themselves.
